TROPIC • URBAN AFFAIRS
New direction
Tropic digs deeper into the debate over a lack of diversity
and fresh faces in the Cairns leadership scene.
A ‘future of Cairns’ committee set up by
Cairns Regional Council has sparked plenty of
controversy since our online news site Tropic Now
published a story highlighting the membership
of the group.
Featuring mostly older men, with no young
people, 1 Indigenous representative and only five
women in the 19-person group, the story caused
outrage on all sides. Some were offended by the
criticism of the mostly male group, while others
described it as an “old boys club” and condemned
it as a missed opportunity.
To progress the debate, the Tropic team has
handpicked an alternative team, based on merit
and a mix of youth, experience and
fresh thinking.
