Sea the murals
Tropic talks to some local
businesses and organisations
who threw their support behind
the recent Sea Walls exhibition.
In this International Year of the Reef,
Cairns was aptly chosen to host
Australia’s first edition of Sea Walls:
Artists for Oceans due to our location as
the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef.
With a mission to give worldwide
oceans a voice, a group of local and
international artists joined forces to
convert blank walls into homages to the
ocean - motifs of fish, coral, turtles, and
other marine scenes.
Developed and curated by international
conservation organisation, PangeaSeed
Foundation, the Sea Walls project
transforms blank urban walls from
shopping centres to alleyways into
spectacular works of art all with the aim
of raising awareness for ocean health.

Cairns Plaza Hotel
e owner of Cairns Plaza Hotel, Peter
Boylan, had always thought his
property was perfect for a large-scale
artwork or mural so he jumped at the
opportunity to be involved in the Sea
Walls project. Towering eight storeys
over the Cairns Esplanade the work has
gained a great deal of positive feedback
from hotel guests and passersby.
“People are coming in o f the street and
congratulating us on such a fantastic
initiative and we have to let them know
it wasn't us - but that we are very proud
to be involved. Council should
encourage more art and beautification
around the CBD.” Mr Boylan said.
