Packed program
Cairns Art Gallery kickstarts
2019 with a stunning array
of exhibitions from local and
international artists.
DAVID HOCKNEY: PRINTS
The Cairns Art Gallery is the premier venue for the
National Gallery of Australia’s touring exhibition, David
Hockney: Prints. Hockney, a British artist, is regarded
as one of the greatest printmakers of all time and in
November, at a Christie’s auction in New York, a painting
from his swimming pool series sold for a record breaking
$90.3 million. The current exhibition at the Cairns Art
Gallery features highlights from the 2017 NGA Hockney
exhibition and presents an exciting insight into the mind
of an iconic artist still searching for new ways of seeing.
Hockney is an unorthodox artist, eclectic creator and
compulsive rule breaker. Now in his eighties, he continues
to demonstrate a profound visual curiosity and desire to
surprise, shock and entertain.
FASHIONING BLACK IDENTITY
Africa and the African Diaspora
SEYDOU KEÏTA | LEONCE RAPHAEL AGBODJELOU
OMAR VICTOR DIOP | NAMSA LEUBA | DELPHINE
DIALLO | ATONG ATEM | JOJO ABOT
A visually stunning exhibition, Fashioning Black Identity
presents works by seven prominent artists from Africa and
the African diaspora who use photography, portraiture and
fashion to redefine personal and cultural identity. Through
highly evocative and production-rich photographs, fashion
and different spatial, corporal and temporal reference points
are used to capture real and imagined experiences and
situations to present a compelling and complex narrative of
blackness and perceptions of self-identity and otherness.
