What’s on at Cairns Art Gallery
TERMINUS
In the first virtual reality exhibition to visit the Gallery,
TERMINUS is currently showing in Cairns as part of its
acclaimed national tour. Created by two contemporary
New Zealand artists – New York-based Jess Johnson and
Simon Ward – the experience is set in a mysterious universe
of alien architecture populated by humanoid clones and
cryptic symbols. Through VR technology, the audience
explores the foreign setting via a network of travellators
and gateways, embracing a ‘slippage of time and space’ as
they enter a fictional world of digital reality.
TERMINUS has been described as ‘an experience that
left visitors with their mouths hanging open’ when it first
presented at the National Gallery of Australia (NGA) in 2018.
This touring exhibition, presented by NGA, is at the Cairns
Art Gallery until 30 October.
