TIMES WITH THE TAIPANS
While basketball fans across the
country wait with bated breath for
the NBL to announce the official
starting date for next season,
Tropic takes a look back at ten
times the Taipans were the talk of
the town last time around.
December
3. The Taipans get recognised for their play-off potential,
thanks to a brilliant road game against the Sydney
Kings. The 108-98 victory came after the Taipans had
already defeated last season’s Grand Finalists Perth and
Melbourne twice, and rocketed them into the Top Four.
October
1. The new-look Taipans team begin the 2019-20 season
with a bang, registering a huge 99-76 win out west
against the Perth Wildcats. Cam Oliver silences the
intimidating 13,000-strong crowd with some monster
dunks on his way to the game-high 22 points.
4. The club properly retire the jersey of Aaron Grabau,
hanging number 8 in the rafters in recognition of his
accomplishments across 405 games in orange. The
emotional pre-game ceremony sent chills throughout
the Cairns Convention Centre, with a standing ovation
for Bo Bo.
November
2. The Taipans rep their popular “black out” kits for IFYS Foster
Care. Each season, the special edition game-worn uniforms
are auctioned off to raise money for the charity organisation,
with the club tallying a donation of almost $35,000 over the
past five years.
