Tropic Weekender: Our guide to the best events and things to do in Cairns

We kick off the week strong with 10cc's national tour and the Tropical Innovation Festival, followed by The Grand Kyiv Ballet and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Wine Fiend returns for another instalment, along with the Festival of Spirits and the Festival of the Knob. To wrap up the week, we also have the Cairns Bat Festival.

Wednesday 7 June

UK Legends 10cc is brining their Ultimate Greatest Hits Tour to CPAC. With timeless hits, 10cc delivers an enthralling musical experience that spans generations. Their longevity and critical acclaim are a testament to their artistry, having sold 30 million albums worldwide.

We're half way through the Tropical Innovation Festival, but don't fret, there's still three days to go! With shorter sessions, multiple speaker appearances, and networking opportunities, the festival caters to everyone. Attendees come from diverse backgrounds, including founders, investors, ecosystem enablers, and government employees.

Thursday 8 June

The Grand Kyiv Ballet of Ukraine is presenting two acts for a magnificent evening of ballet at CPAC. The first act features the legendary ballet Forest Song, a mystical love story that highlights the conflict between the human world and nature. In the second act, the flamboyant and romantic comedy Don Quixote takes the stage, with vibrant costumes, breathtaking dancers, and an inspiring musical score.

Talking Pictures are hosting or an evening of exploration of the film Paradise Road, a captivating story of women finding solace through music during World War II. Mostly shot in Port Douglas using local cast and crew, Paradise Road was directed by Bruce Beresford and starred Glenn Close and Frances McDormand. Hear from special guests, including make-up artist Sarah Speller, as they share insights into the filmmaking process. Don't miss this unforgettable event celebrating the power of the moving image.

Friday 9 June

Celebrate innovation at Deep Dive into Indigenous Innovation with established and emerging innovators and entrepreneurs in the space. Suitable for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous business people, this event offers insights from expert First Nations people. 

After sellout performances across fringe and comedy festivals abroad, an all-new lineup of The Nasty Show Australia is coming to Macalister's Brewery. Created and hosted by comedian Jez Watts, get ready for an unforgettable night of filthy, dark, and outrageously inappropriate comedy from Sian Smyth, Glenn Grimwood, and local talent Macca Melody.

Head to Elixir Bar for a night of live music featuring Rob Howe & The Guillotines who are launching their new single Lying Awake, bringing their unique blend of indie-rock and alternative sounds. They are supported by Cairns-based Cinnamon Sun and Tessa Devine.

Held at Coast Watcher Park in Trinity Beach, the Beaches Festival is a free family event that celebrates community. The evening is emceed by The Festival Guy, and features fire shows, Taiko drumming, school band showcases, food stalls, children's activities, and live music.

Saturday 10 June

Head to The Tanks for an electrifying night as Christian Burkhardt, renowned for his signature electronic sound and complex rhythms, takes over the decks. With a presence felt at Europe's biggest festivals, including Ibiza, Sónar Festival, and Click in the Dunes, Christian is ready to unleash his heavy-hitting house music. Joining him is JOSS from Sydney, bringing his infectious energy to make it a night to remember.

Australia's biggest comedy festival is on tour for its 25th year! Catch the best comedians from the 2023 Melbourne International Comedy Festival for a night of laughter and fun with a fantastic line-up of established favourites and emerging stars.

Immerse yourself in a day of celebration at the Festival of Spirits at Hemingways Cairns Wharf. Discover the best of local distilleries, indulge in delicious cocktails, and enjoy captivating performances by The Secret Men and Cairns Voice Studio. Join the juggling competition for a chance to win exciting prizes, free entry.

Head to Yorkeys Know for the Festival of the Knob for a fun-filled day of market stalls, stage entertainment, food trucks, and a lively funfair. Admission is free, and the food and drink area will be open until 6pm. Festivities kick off from 10am.

Experience another night of Wine Fiend at Caffiend, where it transforms into a wine bar offering specialty wines and a paired canapé experience. After dark you'll be treated to an unforgettable evening with Cairns' foodie and wine legend, Frank Dangelico. Stay tuned for the wine list and menu updates on their socials.

Sunday 11 June

Experience the extraordinary vocal talents of over 8,000 Queensland state school students at the Creative Generation Choral Fanfare. This biennial choral festival serves as a platform for schools across FNQ to celebrate and promote their choral music programs.

Celebrate bats at the Cairns Bat Festival at Wharf One Cafe. Launching their new Spectacled flying-fox board game, you can delve into their mysterious world, learn bat facts, and watch flying-foxes over Trinity Inlet. There will be live music, face painting, bat games, and more. You can also dress up for a chance to win prizes, all while supporting bat carers through funds raised.
