Cairns will remember the life and service of Queen Elizabeth II at a memorial service next week.

The non-denominational service will be held at St Monica’s Cathedral from 10 to 11am on Thursday 22 September, coinciding with the special public holiday set aside as a national day of mourning.

Cairns Mayor Bob Manning said the Queen’s visits to the city are fondly remembered.

##BA##

“Her Majesty visited Cairns on three occasions: 1954, 1970, and 2002, creating treasured lifelong memories for residents.

##PQ##

“The Queen was the longest serving monarch in modern times, and for the vast majority of our community, the only monarch that we have ever known.”

Councillor Manning said a commemorative message wall will be in place at the service and afterwards for people to record their personal messages.

The Cairns memorial is a free, ticketed event, with numbers limited. Council will post a link on its website at 9am on Thursday for bookings.
