Italian-style piazza forms centrepiece of ‘cruise ship on land’ for Cairns seniors

Standalone villas will be built alongside a full complement of social, lifestyle, beauty, health and care facilities as part of a new $75-million seniors living development south of Cairns.

The Straguszi family, creators of the iconic Lakes Resort and Cairns One, have spent seven years developing the concept which is centred around a community piazza.

As well as a restaurant, bar and hairdresser, residents have access to on-site health and respite care.

Family spokesperson Renee Straguszi said it means seniors can continue to stay in their own homes, couples can stay together, and partners can have a trip to see the grandkids knowing their other half is well cared for in their absence.

“It was important for us to create a community where residents have plenty of opportunity to be adventurous and remain independent, but then be able to call on help if they need,” she said.

Casa Mia will be built on 3.8 hectares at Gordonvale.

It will include 150 self-contained villas and plenty of facilities aimed at expanding social circles.

A full-time social co-ordinator will create a list of daily activities to choose from.

Sales Manager Michelle Reimann said it will be like a cruise ship on land, with residents able to choose their own adventures.

“Residents have full access to an on-site restaurant, bar, café, gym, pool, wellness centre, hairdresser, community garden, a man cave and even a ladies shed,” she said.

The village’s central piazza is designed to be the heart of the community.

It's also a nod to the Straguszi family's Italian heritage.

“It will be a place to meet for a daily coffee or catch up with visiting family and friends," Michelle said.

“It’s also a venue for special events and performances and has been designed to be used and enjoyed daily.”

Envigor Home Care has partnered with Casa Mia Living as a service provider.

Construction of the first stage is scheduled to begin in October.
