Spiderbait set to headline Port Douglas Carnivale
The Far North has secured one of Australia’s most renowned rock icons this coming May.
Spiderbait, known across the world for classic hits like Black Betty, Calypso, and Buy Me a Pony, will headline the Port Douglas Carnivale’s Tropic Rock Concert.
Set to play on Saturday 22 May at Rex Smeal Park, the band will bring the hits known for topping Australia’s ARIA charts and triple j’s Hottest 100, and selling out shows around the globe.
Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr said Port Douglas is excited to have Spiderbait as the Carnivale headline act.
“Their live shows always have that extra something and certainly draw the crowds,” Cr Kerr said.
The upcoming Port Douglas Carnivale, which was cancelled last year for the first time in its 25-year history, is back on the agenda with a full line-up of events.
The festivities will open with the Wonderland Spiegeltent on Friday 14 May, featuring everything from seductive sword-swallowers to bubble-gum-wielding burlesque artists in its circus, cabaret and comedy show.
The following Friday, 21 May, will bring the Longest Lunch at Rex Smeal Park, with food by Ochre Restaurant and drinks by Wolf Lane Distillery, Hemingway’s Brewery and Barrier Reef Brewing Co.
Later that day Port Douglas will transform to host the Macrossan Street Parade, with market stalls, amusement rides and a spectacular fireworks display to draw a crowd of thousands.
Saturday 22 May will also see a Family Beach Day on Four Mile Beach, with a skydiving and kite display, a sand sculpting competition, face painting and beach hockey included in the day’s activities.
Mayor Kerr said the Port Douglas Carnivale offers something for everyone.
“Carnivale is a great time to be in Port Douglas, with so much going on it’s the perfect time to experience everything we have to offer in Australia’s own tropical paradise,” he said.
“We are also calling for sponsors and urge local businesses and others to invest in Carnivale 2021 to ensure it is the terrific event we have been waiting for.”
