A 24-year-old Mareeba man has been arrested and charged after he allegedly pointed a gun at a man’s head in a roadside armed robbery attempt.

The two men were travelling in separate cars along Jaye Street in Edge Hill at 3:45pm last Thursday when a disagreement broke out.

Detective Inspector Kevin Goan said both of them pulled over to the side of the road.

“The driver of the following vehicle approached the other gentleman – a 57-year-old local Cairns man – and produced a firearm,” he said.

“The victim of this crime retreated to his vehicle and left the scene.”

The 57-year-old sustained a minor head injury.

“When the firearm was presented in the face of the victim he’s connected with the victim’s head and caused an abrasion,” Det Insp Goan said.

“The victim was very vigilant to his surroundings and took note of quite a number of things which gave police the opportunity to take a Mareeba man into custody.

“We did conduct some searches and a handheld gel blaster pistol was recovered.”

Police are unsure if the gel blaster was the same weapon allegedly used during the incident.

The accused was arrested when he visited Mareeba Police Station the following day for an unrelated matter.

He’s been charged with five offences including two counts of possessing a dangerous drug (methylamphetamine) and one count each of attempted armed robbery, evade police and stealing.

The man appeared in the Mareeba Magistrates Court on Saturday and was remanded in custody.

He is scheduled to reappear on July 21.
