One of Far North Queensland’s most unique and treasured tourism icons, Gallo Dairyland, is officially on the market.

The Tablelands dairy, which has been in the Gallo family since 1937, is on the market for $4.75 million with its cheese and chocolate factory, café and retail outlet all part of the package.

The listing also includes the farm’s livestock – a herd of about 200 Holstein-Friesian cows – as well as its petting zoo of pigs, turkeys, chickens and geese.

Real estate agent Troy McGuane of Ray White Smithfield said the 50-acre property offers everything for a new owner to walk straight into a profitable business.

“There are many prongs to the business that make it quite a niche opportunity but no brainer at the same time,” he told Tropic Now.

“You’ve got the rotary dairy, the cheese factory, the chocolate, the retail outlet and café, and the reputation as a highly popular tourism destination.

“Only 30 or so cows are currently used to service the cheese and chocolate manufacturing, with the rest of the milk sold commercially.

“The family are keeping the remaining 950 acres, with an opportunity to lease the land there if the buyer wants to keep a large number of livestock.

“There’s also an opportunity to build on the factory’s capacity and increase its volume of product.”

Gallo Dairyland, about an hour’s drive from Cairns, opened its doors to the public in 2007.

The family’s long-running dairy then grew into an educational farm experience, which has remained popular among locals and visiting tourists – including a spike in travelling caravanners through the pandemic.

Its cheeses, yoghurts and butter are also available in many local grocers and supplied to restaurants across the region.

Mr McGuane said the owners are looking to scale back and pass on the labour-intensive business after their long tenure.

“The property and business bundle has already had a lot of interest within a week of being listed,” he said.

“With all property at the moment, the interest is split about fifty-fifty between local and interstate buyers.

“Whoever buys it will be taking on a strong and sturdy investment.

“The profitability really stacks up and I think it will easily sell on its merits.”
