Tropic Weekender: Our curated guide to the best upcoming events around Cairns

The Easter weekend is here! And with it comes lots of markets, art exhibitions, food events and an exciting bazaar at Boardwalk Social.

The Taipans are also playing in town this Sunday, while the Court House hosts the Cairns Young Archies alongside the Archibald Prize at the Gallery.

There'll be a shower or two over the weekend, with max temperatures of 30.

Thursday 1 April

The weekend’s arrived early with the Freshwater Easter Festival tonight! The free event will include market stalls, live entertainment, a range of children’s activities and a licensed bar. We also hear the Easter Bunny will be there to give away some chocolate eggs.

Miss Chief invites you to her Yum Cha Emporium tonight. Eight plates of delectable dumplings and drink for $55, accompanied by some usual signature dishes. 7pm start.

CPAC’s series of Bluey’s Big Play shows starts today and will run over the next few days. The live theatre performance will feature spectacularly created puppets, bringing the children’s TV series to life.

Starting today, the Artists of the North exhibition will show at Tanks Arts Centre for the next four weeks. Without a subject or genre, no image is too wild or untamed, no subject subdued. Head to the Tanks tonight for the launch, 6pm.

Friday 2 April

You may have seen the Archibald already, but have you seen the Young Archies? The best of Cairns’ young artists are showcasing at the Court House, next to the Art Gallery, until May 1. Visit between 10am and 4pm, Tuesday to Saturday.

Saturday's the day for markets, it seems!

The Gordonvale Cottage Market is on from 8am to midday, while the Koah Monthly Market will run from 9am to 1pm. The Atherton Markets are also on from 7am to 1pm today.

Crystalbrook’s Flynn is hosting its first Boardwalk Bazaar this Saturday afternoon. Described as a ‘gastronomical pop-up extravaganza’, the event will feature live music and the best eats and drinks from local producers. 11am to 5pm.

Sunday 4 April

More weekend markets! Palm Cove Markets will be on from 8am to 2pm along the Esplanade, while those spending Sunday in the Tablelands might like to drop into the Tolga Markets from 7:30am till midday.
