EARLIER 23/8/20:

Far North Queensland has recorded the highest number of COVID-19 tests for a region outside of the south-east corner of Queensland, with 29,776 tests (as at 12 August) conducted across the Cairns and Hinterland region this year.

The Cairns Hospital fever clinic has been seeing an average of 88 people per day in recent weeks, compared to 54 per week in June.

The hospital's COVID Testing and Fever Clinic has been relocated from Lake Street to the access way/carpark area at the north end of the hospital precinct on Cairns Esplanade.

EARLIER 14/8/20:

“The more people are testing, the sooner we will be able to act if there is COVID-19 transmission within the community."

That's the message from health authorities in the Far North as more testing clinics are opened across the region.

Some tests require a doctor's referral, while others can be accessed by calling ahead and making an appointment with your nearest clinic.

Getting tested

Queensland Health is encouraging more people to get tested for COVID-19. Getting tested will help find as many cases in the community as quickly as possible, ensuring authorities are doing everything they can to manage Queensland’s response to the pandemic.

If you have any of the following COVID-19 symptoms, no matter how mild, get tested: Fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose, fatigue, loss of smell and/or taste.

Call emergency services on 000 if you are very sick.

About the testing process

Testing for COVID-19 involves collecting nasal (inside your nose) or throat swabs, and/or sputum (mucus coughed up). These samples are then transferred to the nearest laboratory that is set up to test for COVID-19.

If you are tested for COVID-19 but aren't really sick, you will be sent home to self-isolate while you wait for the test results. This may take several days.

If you are really sick you may be admitted to hospital for treatment. If you become sicker while you are waiting for results, please contact your doctor or call an ambulance. Make sure you let them know you are waiting for test results for COVID-19.

If the result is positive: you will receive a call from a public health doctor or nurse who will tell you what to do next. If you are well enough to take care of yourself, you will need to stay at home in self-isolation until you recover. If you get sicker, you may be admitted to hospital in an isolation area.

If the result is negative: your doctor or the clinic that tested you may let you know. Depending on where you got tested, you may just receive an automated SMS. If you have been issued with a notice telling you to self-quarantine, you must stay in self-quarantine until the end date written on the notice, even if you get a negative result. This is because you may still develop COVID-19 infection.
