Stunning drone footage of Barron Falls has captured the extent of the weekend's downpour in the Cairns region, with over 200mm falling in Cairns over the past 48 hours.

The footage was captured by Lance Robb from local videography company Hovercam during a break in the weather yesterday.

With the Cairns area receiving more than 440mm of rain over the past six days, Cairns Regional Council has today lifted its Level 1 water restrictions. The dam water level is now within approximately 20 centimetres of the spillway.

Mayor Bob Manning said it was normal for the dam to spill over during the wet season, with hopes that will happen "very soon".

“At the start of the summer, the water level at the dam was much lower than usual because it didn’t reach the spillway the previous wet season," Cr Manning said.

“Weather conditions can change quickly and we need to always consider how much water we are using.

“If our consumption goes up significantly and we don’t continue to get steady rainfall over the next couple of months, we could be going into the next wet season in a similar situation to what we’ve just experienced.”

While the rain is expected to ease for the rest of the week, don't but your brollies away just yet.

The Bureau of Meteorology says showers will continue through to Sunday, with the chance of thunderstorms throughout the week and maximum temperatures up to 32C on Tuesday and Wednesday.
