Cairns High goes back to 1917 to celebrate centenary milestone

Reaching your 100th birthday is always a good reason to throw a massive party and Cairns State High School has an exciting reunion weekend planned next month to mark its centenary.

The school will open its gates, doors and hallways to the community on 15 and 16 September so everyone can head back to school and help mark the important milestone.

Cairns High executive principal Chris Zilm is encouraging the community to get involved and to take up "an excellent opportunity" to see how much the school has changed over the years.

“In the past 100 years, Cairns High has evolved into a highly sought after, internationally accredited, independent public school with a strong reputation for its excellence programs and opportunities it offers students,” he said.<strike></strike>

“The centenary year will give many the opportunity to come together and celebrate such an important milestone for the whole community.

“Cairns High has played such a pivotal role in the city’s history."

An open day on September 15 will include tours of the school, memorabilia displays, a legacy unveiling and dedication.

Then the clock will be turned back to 1917 for the centenary celebrations gala event, a Jazz Supper Club on September 16.

"Preparations are well underway and I am excited to see the quad transformed into a party zone for the night with food and entertainment," he said.

“As you enter the venue, you will be transported back to 1917 for what is sure to be a spectacular evening.”

Tickets to the events can be purchased from the school, by phoning 4050 3042 or here.
