CAIRNS TEENS INVITED TO LEARN COMPUTER CODING AFTER SCHOOL

Cairns kids from late primary to early secondary school ages are being invited to learn computer coding after school on Friday afternoons, from 22 April onwards.
The Silicon Coast Extracurricular Code School (SCXCS) was established in 2015 to teach young people how to develop computer programs.
SCXCS runs coding schools in Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, Maryborough and the Sunshine Coast. Now CQUniversity is bringing the coding school to Cairns.
CQUniversity Senior Lecturer Dr Jamie Shield says that, although there are code schools in major Australian cities, people in regional, rural and remote Australia have few opportunities to learn to code.
"There are many on-line tutorials but it is not easy to learn to code without professional assistance," Dr Shield says.
"Over the past two years, we have developed and trialed a methodology which is based on on-line learning plus assistance from professional tutors.
"The new high school curriculum includes some very basic coding. SCXCS will teach students languages used commercially so that they may either use their skills to develop Apps or games or commercial systems used in major enterprises throughout the world. Using technology available now, skilled programmers can work anywhere in the world. There is no need for programmers to move to major cities to get work."
Starting on 22 April, courses will be held at CQUniversity Cairns campus. The course will last seven weeks, with one hour a week guided training each Friday from 4-5pm. Students will be expected to continue on-line learning between formal classes. The cost is $30 a week.
